Valentino Garavani has been a working fashion designer since 1960, and his empire continues to grow. According to WWD, the company netted a profit of $644.1 million in 2013, a 25 percent increase from $500.5 million in 2012.

CEO Stefano Sassi credits the rise in revenue to the fact that the Italian fashion house’s primary market remains Europe, rather than China, where other luxury brands experienced sales slumps last year. In addition to its impressive sales figures, Valentino is also opening stores in three new locations: Fifth Avenue in New York, Piazza Mignanelli in Rome, and Canton Road in Hong Kong.

Valentino is known for opulence, elegance, and sheer femininity. In the 2008 documentary, Valentino: The Last Emperor, a reporter asks Mr. Valentino, “What do women want?” He responds promptly and simply, “They want to be beautiful.”
