Tai Chi is a mind-body exercise that many know about but haven’t tried. This summer, take a class at Body & Brain studio at their Union Square location.

Body & Brain (formerly Dahn Yoga) has offered Tai Chi and other holistic health classes for nearly 20 years. Their Tai Chi workouts are centralized around DahnMuDo and Qigong—the two primary components of the practice.

DahnMuDo is a high intensity martial arts form that focuses on strengthening spiritual and mental health through physically challenging movements. DahnMuDo literally translates to “the art of being limitless” and the rigor of the workout varies from beginner to advanced.

Qigong is the meditation component of Tai Chi, and in its traditional form incorporates breathing techniques and gentle movements into meditation. “Qi” is the energy that moves through living things and “gong” translates to cultivation, or work.

Regulars at Body & Brain practice Tai Chi to improve health issues such as digestive problems, back pain and anxiety disorders—but many members go solely for the challenging workout and holistic stress relief. Class times at the Union Square location vary weekly, so be sure to check the schedule online before showing up. Come 10 minutes early for warm-up exercises and remember to take off your shoes before entering the studio.
