Russian art collectors Marina and Nikolay Shchukin did the honors of exhibiting their latest collection, From Primitivism to Propaganda: Russia’s Modern Masters, to a limited audience at The National Arts Club last Wednesday, June 4th. Though the exhibition wasn’t composed of all 35 artworks as promised prior to opening day, May 19,  the pieces presented were enough to tell the story of the first thirty years of the 20th century in Russia.

Marina and Nikolay have been collecting these artworks for quite a while. “Some of these artworks were already in the family, and some were collected by Nikolay,” said Marina. “Nikolay has been collecting artworks for about 40 years now, by exchanging and buying artworks with other collectors.” In spite of being dated back to the early 20th century and having been passed from collector to collector, the artwork remains in great conditions today.

One of the art pieces displayed is untitled by Kirill Zdanevich, a gouache and ink on paper. It captures the viewer’s attention with the color black in letters, numbers and squiggles written on top of the base colors of the art piece blue, orange, yellow, and gray.

Another distinguishing art piece shown is Mikhail Larionov’s untitled mixed media on paper. The focus transitions from the different shapes and letters that are spread throughout the piece, to the silhouette of a woman in the center.

All of the pieces shown are stunningly crafted in ways some people can’t even imagine. Every piece will draw you in and leave you wondering what the artist was thinking.

So don’t miss out on this fabulous art exhibition that will continue to show until June 14. For more information go to galleryshchukin.com.
