Downtown editors love every aspect of big city living. However, every now and then, we need a change of pace. Throughout the summer we will be releasing our ‘Editors Picks’ for great day trip or get-away destinations that are fun for the whole family.

If mystery and intrigue are what you and your family are looking for, plan a visit to one of New York’s most beautiful historic sites and home of the legendary “Headless Horseman” in Sleepy Hollow, New York. This destination has something to offer for everyone.

Fans of ghost stories, dark and brooding legends can visit the sites where Ichabod Crane was said to have traveled. Both guided and unguided tours of the Old Dutch Church and Burying Ground are available; the Old Dutch Church is the location where legend says Crane attempted to get sanctuary from the Headless Horseman. The eerie location is historic and fun for the whole family.

For a different flavor of history, visitors can stop by the nearby Kykuit, also known as the Rockefeller Estate in Pocantico Hills. The historic mansion is the former home of Standard Oil Titan John D. Rockefeller and his family. The mansion houses the Rockefeller family collection of art, including Pablo Picasso tapestries and an impressive collection of sculptures.

The estate overlooks the Friends of Rockefeller State Park Preserve, a park playing host to 55 miles of trails open to walking, jogging, hiking, nature study, bird watching, photography and equestrian sports.

Sleepy Hollow can be reached by the Hudson 745 train from Grand Central Station or by car, Zip car, Uber or car service via NY-94 N and Saw Mill River Parkway or via I-87 N. It will take just over 45 minutes by train or about an hour by car.
