Yesterday evening, DOWTOWN Magazine had the pleasure of attending the Institute of International Education IIE Gala 2014: Celebrating of Innovation that took place at Cipriani Wall Street.
The Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF), founded by Shawn “JAY Z” Carter and his mother, Gloria Carter, increased its support for study abroad scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with financial need through the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, administered by the Institute of International Education.
The Institute of International Education is a world leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. An independent, non-profit organization founded in 1919, the IIE designs and implements programs of study and training for students, educators, young professionals and trainees from all sectors with funding from government agencies, foundations and corporations.
Six Shawn Carter/Gilman International Scholarship (SCGIS) recipients were selected to study abroad in the Summer and Fall 2014 academic terms. Under the Gilman Program, U.S. students learn foreign languages and prepare for careers in the global economy by studying abroad.
Yesterday’s Gala was held to recognize leaders in International Education and IIE’s work. Among awarded individuals were the Chrysler Group and its Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne, Shawn Carter Foundation and Ms. Gloria Carter, Co-Founder and CEO. Assistant Secretary of State Evan Ryan spoke about the educational programs of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the need for more American students to study abroad.
