1. Arepas

Arepa Factory (East Village)

Daily from 11am-11pm

Caracas Arepa Bar has had the arepas market pretty much locked down… until now. Arepa Factory, the newest addition to the East Village, is a stone’s throw from its competitor, and is serving a selection of arepas (corn, spinach, chia, oatmeal and flaxseed) stuffed with familiar and innovative fillings. Build your own or grab the Frida Khalo, Inglesa or the Pabellon arepa. Definitely try one of their delicious fresh juices, and a few items of their finger food menu as you wait. Small space so take your meal to go for a quick bite at the Tompkins Square Park across the street.

2. Inferno Night

McKittrick Hotel (Chelsea)

Fri, Oct 30th and Sat, Oct 31st (Check site for entry times)

The creators behind the mind-bending “Sleep No More” theater experience,  present a two-night demonic halloween party, “Inferno.” Needless to say, this is the ultimate Halloween night experience–live performances and an open bar! If you want the whole ravishingly demonic experience, “Sleep No More,” “Sumptuous Supper on the Heath” (flowing drinks and live music) and the “Inferno” party, dig deep for the $260-750 it will cost you. But, if you are just looking for some fiendishly fabulous time, party tickets start at $70 for Oct, 30th and $250 for Oct 31st. Occult inspired costumes or all in black.

3. Día de los Muertos

St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery (East Village)

Sat, Oct 31st from 12-6 pm and Sun, Nov 1st-Mon, Nov 2nd from 1-6pm

In Mexico, Día de Muertos is not about costumes and candy corn, it is a serious holiday that allows those that have lost loved ones to honor and celebrate the deceased with offerings of food, wine, flowers and candles. Each year Mano a Mano sets up a beautiful altar where goers can learn about and take part in the true traditions and practices of Día de Muertos. You will also enjoy art workshops, Mexican foods,  arts and crafts marketplace and live music. FREE

4. Hasan the Homecoming King

Cherry Lane Theater (Greenwich Village)

Through November 15th (check site for performance dates and times)

Hasan Minhaj of The Daily Show takes the stage in “Homecoming King” to talk about what it’s like to grow up Indian, raised only by his dad for the first 8 years of his life, in a small all-white  California town. The show is both moving and funny, as Hasan finds humor in a sea of alienation and rejection.  $30

5. Bounce Queen

Irving Plaza (Union Square)

Oct 31st at 11:30pm

For a night of seriously raucous fun you need to check out bounce hip hop Queen Big Freedia, an electric performer with an inexhaustible source of wit and energy. Come shake it at Irving Plaza, where Big Freedia will be joined by Hibou (awesome dream pop) and Boyfriend (K-pop boy band).  Go figure that combo. $20

6. Crazy Burgers

334 Bowery (Bowery)

Soft opening hours Tues-Sat 6pm-2am

A Philadelphia favorite for years, PYT, the folks that brought the world the donut burger among other crazy patty concoctions, have finally arrived in New York! On the menu are staples like The Cheesesteak Pretzel Roll Burger, Doh! Nut Burger (with chocolate covered bacon), The Pickleback, the original (and very messy) PYT Burger plus a rotating list of specialty burgers like $64 Basquiat Premium Beef Burger, made of Wagyu Ribeye from Japan Premium Beef.

7. A Dozen Sweet Sins

Georgetown Cupcakes (Soho)

Daily

For some Halloween is about exploring their dark side under the cloak of the night (and a rubber mask) at the Village Halloween Parade. For others, it’s an opportunity to sit on the couch, watch horror films and gorge on candy and sweets, with no repercussions… it’s Halloween after all; we all have our demons. For all those sweet devils out there, sink your fangs into Georgetown Cupcake’s Halloween Dozen. Irresistible flavors include: Vanilla Bat, Pumpkin Spice Spooky Tree and Chocolate Ghost.
