Tonight and tomorrow, don’t miss the modern cult-classic The Room (2003), showing at Landmark Sunshine Theatre in downtown Manhattan! The film, a modern-day “so bad it’s good” cult classic in the spirit of Plan 9 from Outer Space, concerns itself with a melodramatic love triangle that has developed between a man, his lover, and his best friend. Written, directed, produced by, and starring Tommy Wiseau, the film is comprised of mostly first-time actors, and has become infamous due to the flaws in just about every aspect of its production. The script and acting are groan-inducing, and the film begins many subplots that it never bothers to finish, or even address again.
Shortly after its release, the film began selling out theatres internationally, as audiences rushed to witness the film in all its horrible glory, prompting Wiseau to retroactively label the film a black comedy. The public wasn’t fooled, and Wiseau has gained notoriety as a modern-day Ed Wood. The film was called “the Citizen Kane of bad movies” by Entertainment Weekly, and has featured on numerous film critics’ “Worst-Ever” lists.
