Carefree festival goers

The first day set the precedence for whimsical weekend. Despite the inconsistent weather conditions, festival-goers were eager to frolic and make the most of the space on Randall’s Island Park . In addition to the performances, spread across 4 stages, there were many enjoyable and convenient activities. There were delicious food and refreshment stands, art installations, the Sennheiser Silent Disco, complete with a photo booth, and various sponsored lounges to enjoy cocktails and killer concert views.

Props are strongly encouraged at Governors Ball

Though the flower crown and lace-laden looks were alive and well on the island, there were other diverse fashion trends making a statement at Governors Ball like patriotic neons, spandex costumes and headgear ranging from balloon animals to bonnets.

The first day’s lineup was wide-ranging, with club bangers and dance-friendly songs from Future and Chromeo, feel-good melodies from Vance Joy and the hypnotic beats from Odesza and Ratatat. The night concluded with an exhilarating performance from the constantly charismatic Florence and the Machine  and an intense main stage showcase from Drake . Exuding undeniable swagger and stage presence, the Toronto-based rapper stomped around the jungle-themed stage set, singing favorites off of If You’re Reading This, Its Too Late as well as nostalgic past hits that solidified his stardom. He continuously flattered the crowd, vacuum-packed against one another in the main stage space to get a glimpse, saying how they were the most fun that he had ever had at a festival.

The second day matched the vivid energy of the first. The lineup featured many powerful songstresses like Sharon Van Etten, Kiesza and Yukumi Nagano of Little Dragon. Performing veterans, Atmosphere and Björk reaffirmed their fan base with fun and intriguing sets. The night concluded with simultaneous performances by the beat-heavy Deadmau5 and Ryan Adams at opposite ends of the park.

On the third and final day, The Ball was heavy with dance-inciting beats from A Trak, Big Gigantic, and Flying Lotus. Mayer Hawthorne also enchanted fans with his romantic rhythms. The entire festival ended with performances from both Lana Del Rey and The Black Keys. The weekend culminated as a celebration of the various styles of music and the people that admire it.
