Originally, “Battery Park City Block Party,” was created in 2002 by a group of residents after 9/11 in an effort to bring the people of the downtown area together.

“The sentiment behind the first block party was to say that we, the residents and businesses of Battery Park City, are back and want to celebrate the bond that grew out of 9/11, a shared experience and a difficult year, and forge our community into something stronger than before,” said co-organizer, Rosalie Joseph, on the block party’s website.

Many local restaurants/ vendors will be featured at this event and it is kid-friendly. In the past, there has been a variety of fun, friendly competitions including  bubble gum and apple eating contests. There have also been flea markets and many children’s spectacles. These activities are coordinated by Bob Townley of Manhattan Youth.

The event will take place this Sunday September 20th from 11:30 am-4:30 pm where the Esplanade meets North Cove Marina.
