One of the challenges – some would call it a struggle – with interior design is finding the right theme for your home.  Don’t overthink the room and instead use your personal or family credo as inspiration. This approach has practical benefits as well. For example, you don’t ever have to live in fear of your kids writing on your brand new walls if you embrace one of the hottest new interior design trends of 2014: Floor-to-Ceiling Designer Chalkboard.

Floor-to-Ceiling Chalkboard

Whether in the kitchen, powder room for guest, kids rooms themselves, or a foyer or as an accent idea, designer chalkboard is taking urban living by storm. There is a refreshing non-permanence about this concept and it’s fueling all sorts of creativity. I recently had one family come of up two very unique ideas for a blue chalkboard wall in their kitchen. When it was installed last year upon their move, they decided to make it a goals wall. It included items they wanted to add to their home and even dreams about trips they wanted to take. They found it mentally liberating to take these thoughts out of an Excel worksheet and express them for all to see. Logistically, if you bring in a designer to lay something like this out, it can provide this person with valuable insight into your thinking, which of course helps them create the best design concepts throughout the house. But it also can be a great family bonding project or even a hobby if someone in the household is artistic.

In 2014, this specific chalkboard wall has changed to a compass with quadrants for each family member. It should be fascinating to see where it leads. We all know that you simply don’t get the same living space in Manhattan and other urban areas that you do in the suburbs, so getting creative with chalk will help you put some unique personal touches on your home, especially if your tastes and goals change and evolve!
