In the city sometimes better known as the Concrete Jungle, farming isn’t exactly what comes into the minds of most.

This spring the Battery Conservancy introduces its “Forest Farm”, that will provide a bountiful harvest of plants, fruits, and vegetables that can thrive even without much sunlight. The farm will be in a 20,000-square foot plot of land near the Battery Labyrinth. The Battery Labyrinth is an area of circular designs made from granite stones in dedication of those who we lost on Sept. 11.

The Forest Farm comes as the Conservancy has had to relocate the primary, one-acre Battery Urban Farm which normally is near the Staten Ferry Terminal. Currently, the space next to the Forest Farm will be the temporary home of the Urban Farm, and it will return to its original location once the bike path is complete.

Creation of the Forest Farm was a partnership of the Battery Conservancy, assistance with local high school students and other volunteers.  The farm will have the familiar produce of berries, root vegetables, and herbs but it will also produce what is normally found in the wild, and with the vegetation to match it will truly feel as if the visitor got their produce directly from Mother Nature.

Both farms are expected to be open and offer programs to the public by early April.
