Starting on February 25, the New Museum will be unveiling their new exhibit called “Surround Audience,” which will feature fifty-one artists from over twenty-five countries. The Triennial is a signature of the New Museum, as it is the only recurring international exhibition that is devoted to up and coming artists from around the world.

The exhibit draws inspiration from the social and psychological effects of digital technology. It is designed to explore “how artists are currently depicting subjectivity, unpacking complex systems of power, and claiming sites of artistic agency.” The digital technology is not necessarily the primary focus of the exhibition, but how their effects intersect with life.

According to the New Museum website, there are three lines of inquiry that the exhibition draws attention to. First is how the representations of the body and persona have evolved in an image-laden culture.

The second is if it is possible to opt out of or change the pressures of increasingly corporatized and invasive spaces, and the third is how artists are striving to showcase their work through media and activism.

The exhibit itself incorporates a variety of art forms, including sound, dance, poetry, video and sculpture. Many of the works have also been commissioned specifically for the show, thanks to extensive research done by the museum to find artists to showcase worldwide.

The Triennial first began in 2009, and has been a huge success ever since. For information on the exhibit and to buy tickets, please visit the website here.
