Today at 11 am, urbanites crowded the parameter of Broadway from the Battery to City Hall to celebrate the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and their victory at the 2015 FIFA World Cup. The team defeated the Japanese Women’s Team 5-2, earning them their third World Cup title.

Following the parade, there will be a ceremony hosted by Mayor Bill de Blasio at City Hall. The cumulative event is not only a rousing celebration of national pride but was also a historic milestone since a ticker tape parade has not been held for a female athlete since 1960.

The parade drew scores of New Yorkers, dressed in red white and blue to celebrate their national pride. In true ticker tape style, streamers and confetti were poured out of the tall skyscrapers, creating a spontaneous and jovial atmosphere down Broadway. Along with flag-clad marching bands, various patriotic floats crawled through the route titled “The Canyon of Heroes”, inciting a fresh wave a cheers with each passing. On various floats stood members of the Women’s National Soccer Team, celebrating their victory and waving to fans. Though lasting a little under an hour, the parade was a powerful symbol of women, teamwork and national pride.
