Each year, The School of American Ballet anticipates the Workshop Performance Benefit put on by the cutting-edge students that participate in a rigorous workshop process. Ultimately, the workshop makes up three performances for the public at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Juilliard. 550 art patrons along with SAB faculty and friends attend the final performance at the school’s studio for dinner and dancing. It’s a chance to see ballet’s young, up and coming stars. The benefit helps fund scholarships for students, salaries for faculty members, studio upkeep, student programs and ballet shoe purchases.

This year, the benefit celebrated the legendary Rudolf Nureyev and honored the 20th anniversary of the Rudolf Nureyev Dance scholarship. In 1994 the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation presented the school with annual funding to support promising students in honor of Nureyev’s appreciation for SAB and Stanley Williams’s teaching.

The evening began with cocktails followed by the performance and dinner. The post performance dinner has evolved from a small dinner at Gramercy Park Town homes hosted by SAB co-founder Lincoln Kirstein to an illustrious fundraiser held at the SAB studios. This year’s dinner was held at the Ballroom at the Mandarin Oriental with the iconic city skyline in the background.
