With the weather struggling to realize it’s April showers bring May flowers, and not the other way around, a midi dress is the perfect outfit. A great dress that adapts easily from business to pleasure and boasts elegance, and works well for those days where it’s a little cool in the morning, but then gets warmer during the day.

The trend was first seen in the 1920’s, when women’s hemline began to rise up along with their increasing independence and stand in society. Looking at the flapper dresses of the Jazz Age, the hemline is well higher than the previous known long and down to the ground-length. Though it experienced quite a set back during the Great Depression, the midi dress length came back with a vengeance in the 1940’s. A period known for its elegance and grace, two words often said about the midi length dresses and skirts.

In the 1960’s the mini skirt made it’s way into the fashion world and women loved being revolutionary and showing off their legs. The midi dress tried to make its comeback in the 1970’s, but didn’t have much of a success of a reincarnation then. It did, however, resurface in later years.

Midi dresses and skirts – as with all other trends – has seen both spikes and drops in popularity, but is a trend that keeps sticking around. Its strength in particular is its versatility. Like other skirts it comes in different cuts such as A-line and Pencil, but also has a freedom in its length. A midi hemline can be all from mid-calf to just below the knee – with a cute pair of heels the midi skirt is a great look.

One of our downtown favorite spots for shopping midi dresses and skirts is Club Monaco. We suggest strolling through Brookfield Place with its stunning views of the Hudson River and swing by Club Monaco and find yourself the perfect midis for the changing season.
