1. Latke Festival

Metropolitan Pavilion (Chelsea)

Mon, Dec 7th from 6-9pm

Latke is a traditional potato pancake eaten predominantly during the Hanukkah festival, but various versions of this humble dish can be found in many parts of the world. The  deceptively simple recipe of potatoes, eggs and flour has a legion of followers and its own annual tasting event, now in its 7th year. The Latke Festival is a friendly competition among some of New York’s best restaurants and their unique latke versions. In attendance this year are Veselka, Benchmark, Babka Bakers, Jimmy’s No 43, Taboon and many others.

2. Meatballs With Your Beer

Houston Hall (West Village)

Sun, Dec 6th from 12-2pm; 2:30-4:30pm or 5-7pm

Presented by Time Out, eight different restaurants will be offering their renditions of the mighty meatball while Greenpoint Brewery will be helping you wash it all down. Participating restaurants include The Ainsworth, Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, Ainsworth NYC and more – but don’t expect the Meatball Shop, which prefers to stand alone in this category.

3. Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl

Bar None (East Village)

Sat, Dec 5th with registration from 3-10pm

It’s time to raid your family’s closet or hit the local thrift shop to get your hands on the most hideous Christmas sweater you can find. Think acrylic oversized sweaters with red nosed reindeers, poop colored gingerbread houses and men, gaudy sparkly snowflakes and, if you are lucky, blinking lights. Pop one on and join scores of others at the annual Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl. With so many atrocious sweaters, conversation starters won’t be lacking.

4. In Defense of Food

NYU Skirball (Greenwich Village)

Mon, Nov 30th at 6:30 pm

Michael Pollan can be credited for altering the way we think about and eat food. His maxim is “”Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” The documentary “In Defense of Food”, based on Pollan’s book of the same name, will premiere this Monday, with Michael Pollan in attendance and a panel discussion to follow. See this film, before its nationwide premier on PBS, and change the way you think, buy, prepare and eat food.

5. Gatsby Swag Party

Capitale (Bowery)

Sat, Dec 5th from 9pm-2am

The roaring twenties never get old–the glamour, grandeur, decadence, the silk dresses and glass beads, the dapper suits and hats, the music and the drinks, of course. The world’s biggest party comes to Capitale for a night of extravagant Gatsby style celebration. Champagne towers, live performances, music, dancers and plenty of sinful surprises await. Dress code: black tie and flappers.
