At DOWNTOWN’s recent beauty shoot for our September issue, celebrity makeup artist Sacha Harford provided a few expert tips for achieving the perfect look for fall: a bold, deep red lip, chic understated cat-eye and big, loose hair waves.

This season, the rich red-pout and bold face has erupted all over designer runways such as Dolce and Gabana, Lanvin and Bottega Veneta. To achieve this fall beauty trend, Harford suggests starting with the hair, then moving on to the face and finishing with a bold lip. Here’s how to get the look.

Oribe Volumista

First, Harford blew dry our model’s damp hair with Oribe Volumista ($38, Oribe.com).  “It keeps hair sleek but gives it a little lift,” Harford said about the Volumista mist. With a 1 1/8 inch sized curling iron, Harford curled the model’s hair in small sections, pinned each curled piece and sprayed the section with hairspray. After all the hair was curled, pinned and sprayed, the hair was taken out of the set and brushed out completely, leaving a sleek, soft wave.

Makeup Forever HD Foundation

Next, Harford used Makeup Forever cosmetics on the model’s clean, moisturized skin to get the look. Using Makeup Forever HD Foundation ($42, sephora.com), Harford applied a light base coverage all over the face for an even color. A gold shadow was swept across the eyelid and waterproof mascara was applied to top and bottom lashes.  Harford then applied a soft contour under the cheek and finished off the look with a bold matte red lip.

The strong lip was complemented by emerald Kenneth Jay Lane drop earrings.
