The 57th annual Grammy Awards aired last night, and this year’s show was all about the performances, some hits, and some misses. Sam Smith was the big winner of the night, winning 4 trophies, including for Best New Artist and Record of the Year. However, the biggest surprise of the night was Beck winning Album of the Year, beating out the likes of Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, Sam Smith and Pharrell. Check out our recap of the winners and some of the performances:

Album of the Year

Winner: Beck, “Morning Phase”

Hands down, the biggest upset of the night was Beck taking home the coveted Album of the Year Grammy, causing shockwaves throughout the audience and viewers at home.  In a classic Grammy surprise, voters chose a modest-selling rock album over critically acclaimed, best selling albums like Beyonce’s self titled “Beyonce,” and Ed Sheeran’s “x.”  He also won Best Rock Album for “Morning Phase.”

Kanye West almost had another microphone stealing moment (much like the one when he interrupted Taylor Swift during her speech at the VMAs in 2009), when it appeared he was going to hijack Beck’s moment on stage, but then sat down. He later then spoke out against Beck’s win by saying that he should have given his award to Beyonce. Score one again for Kanye for always remembering to cause controversy at award shows.

Record of the Year

Winner: Sam Smith, “Stay With Me”

One of Smith’s 4 wins included Record of the Year, which is the prize for the recording of a single song. He beat out Taylor Swift, who was nominated for her smash, “Shake It Off,” as well as other nominees Sia, Iggy Azalea, and Meghan Trainor. When accepting this award, Smith proclaimed, “I want to thank the man that this record is about, thank you so much because you got me four Grammys.”

Song of the Year

Winner:  Sam Smith, James Napier & William Phillips, “Stay With Me”

Song of the Year is a prize awarded to the songwriters, which Smith also snagged. He beat out fellow nominees Taylor Swift, Sia, Meghan Trainor and Hozier. He also delivered a heartfelt performance alongside Mary J. Blige performing the hit single.

Best New Artist

Winner: Sam Smith

Smith almost swept the top awards of the night by also winning Best New Artist, beating out Iggy Azalea, Bastille, country artist Brandy Clark, and girl group HAIM. The Best New Artist category is one of the most coveted prizes besides Album of the Year.

Other highlights of the night also include performances by AC/DC who opened the show with a song from their new album, “Rock or Bust,” and then performed their hit, “Highway to Hell.”

Hozier performed his hit, “Take Me to Church,’ and was then joined by Annie Lennox from the Eurythmics who took over the stage during her rendition of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You.”

Katy Perry delivered a heartbreaking performance addressing violence against women, with a domestic abuse survivor and advocate Brooke Axtell speaking live about her experience with abuse.

Kanye West performed twice, once solo with his new song “Only One,” and again with Rihanna and Paul McCartney on “FourFiveSeconds.” This was his first award show performance in 6 years, and it did not disappoint.

The Grammys this year were full of award worthy performances and many ups and downs. But it was Sam Smith who overall owned the entire night.
