Little Apple Asks Downtown Mom…Dr. Raj

Q: What is the best parenting advice/phrase you were given?

A: Someone told me long ago to remember that there is no perfect way to parent. So, don’t expect to be a perfect parent and don’t expect to have perfect kids, all of the time. Remind yourself that kids don’t always follow the rules.

Q: What are your favorite things about being a City Mom?

A: I love the sense of community that exists downtown. We can walk around the neighborhood and run into people that we know, or the kids will see their friends on the playground, which is really nice. Plus, the greenery that exists in Battery Park is great. When we first moved to BPC, my kids thought the green park in front of our apartment was our own backyard. So they used to ask my husband and I why there were people in their backyard! They quickly had to learn that it was not just theirs and took some getting used to.

Q: What are the challenges of being a working Mom in the city?

A: I have tried to minimize my stress by working close to home but with my business and my media work I still need to travel throughout the city – traffic is a challenge,  so I take the train as much as possible.

Q: What is your favorite seasonal family activity?

A: In the Fall, we love to go fruit picking and exploring the farms in Long Island and in the Winter we love going ice skating at Brookfield Place at the World Financial Center.

Dr. Raj’s Favorites:

Favorite Downtown Playground or Park

Rockefeller Park because it is next to the water and we can walk along the beautiful esplanade. A close second is the Terrace Club for swimming.

Favorite Downtown place to get a cocktail

White Street – fabulous healthy food with a swanky ambiance

Favorite Downtown Local Gem

The new food court at Brookfield Place – great food in a beautiful setting.

Favorite City Destinations

We love going to the Battery Park Library, which is beautiful. And, we also love going to Merchants Riverhouse in Battery Park City because of they have a kids menu and are also very family friendly.

Favorite mode of transit…Uber vs. Taxi / Walking vs. Subway

We rarely take taxis because my son gets carsick so that is not a regular mode of transportation for us, so we tend to take the subway pretty regularly. Otherwise, we tend to walk almost everywhere because its easy and a great way to get outside with the kids.
