Summer 2017, Citywide Ferry will present a whole new way of getting from one waterfront community in New York City to another. The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the operator Hornblower recently launched their official website.

“Our hundreds of miles of prime waterfront are a place for New Yorkers to work, live and play and it’ll be easier than ever to do all three once Citywide Ferry launches next year,” said Cameron Clark, VP of Hornblower New York.

On their website, developers will share project updates, upcoming public meetings, and – when they reach this point in the process – a live stream of boat construction. They’ll also release maps and schedules, along with information about jobs and how to apply once this becomes relevant. Until then you can use the website to find out more information about when the ferry services are slated to open or how their ticketing will work.

The ticket prices will likely be in accordance with the prices we know from the MTA. A one-way ticket will be $2.75 and includes free transfers within the Citywide Ferry System, though bringing your bike will add $1.00. The price of a monthly unlimited pass is still to be announced. Passengers will be able to pay with cash, credit cards or even their smartphones.

Five ferry services will operate 21 landings throughout New York City. Three of the routes, Rockaway, South Brooklyn and Astoria, are slated to begin service summer 2017 while the last two, Lower East Side and Southview, will open summer 2018. To make it a comfortable ride, the Ferry Service will offer free wireless internet onboard as well as charging stations and snack/drink options.

“We’re moving full speed toward launch of Citywide Ferry Service next summer, and we need input from New Yorkers to make sure the new ferry system is the best it can possibly be,” said NYCEDC President Maria Torres-Springer.

The service is asking for everyone to take a 2-minute survey about the Citywide Ferry to help make it the best service it can possibly be. They are also rewarding five lucky participants with a free annual pass.
