An East Village residential building collapsed at 125 2nd Avenue before a neighboring restaurant became engulfed in flames, according to members of the New York City Police Department.

They confirmed that the collapse occurred around 3:15 p.m. this afternoon. Multiple police officials can be seen wearing masks as smoke permeates the surrounding air.

The Wall Street Journal reported that a preliminary investigation indicated that a possible gas explosion may have caused the collapse and that at least 12 people have been injured.

Areas around the building have been closed off, leaving some residents out on the street to wait.

“I was here when the building exploded, I was sleeping and then I woke up, I saw the news that a building exploded and then I came out here in my flip flops to see what happened and they’re not letting me back in for another 4 to 6 hours,” said a resident of St. Marks Place.
